Day 6 – OUR ADVOCATE I John 2:1-2

A “40-DAY” STUDY OF I, II, III JOHN

By Pastor Jenny McCord

“1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” John’s desire is that we do not sin. However, when we do, we confess it, and we are forgiven. We have an advocate in Jesus Christ to go before us. The Holy Spirit is our advocate as well. A lawyer would be an advocate in the world today. He/she would go before the judge on our behalf. One day we will all face Judgment Day. The good news for believers—when the devil says, GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY—Jesus will say, “I atoned for that sin!” And God will say, INNOCENT, INNOCENT, INNOCENT!

Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus, acknowledging my need for Your grace and holiness. Thank You for Your Word, which calls me to live a life set apart and free from sin. Lord, I confess that I am weak and often fall short of Your glory. I am embarrassed by my vulnerability to temptation and my failings. But I thank You that in those moments of failure, I do not have to walk in shame or stay in condemnation. I praise You for Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, who is my Advocate before You. Thank You, Jesus, for standing in my defense, for interceding for me, and for being the atoning sacrifice that paid the price for all my sins, both past and present. Thank You that Your sacrifice is sufficient not only for mine, but for the sins of the whole world. Help me to run to You immediately when I stumble, trusting in Your faithful, righteous advocate. Give me the strength to walk in obedience, to walk as He walked, and to live a life that glorifies You. In Jesus’ holy name, I pray, Amen.

Blessings, Pr Jenny
