Day 5 – CONFESS OUR SINS I John 1:8-10

A “40-DAY” STUDY OF I, II, III JOHN

By Pastor Jenny McCord

“8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” Anyone ever wonder who wrote the words to our confession before Communion? John did. All the words from Lutheran liturgies are taken from the scriptures. When we confess our sins, we can have confidence that we have forgiveness through Jesus’ blood shed on the cross. Remember, temptation and sin are two different things. Temptation is not sin unless we act upon it. Ask the Holy Spirit to help us resist the temptations that are sent our way each day.

Heavenly Father, I come before You in the light of Your truth, acknowledging that Your Word is light and in You there is no darkness at all. Lord, I confess that I have sinned. If I say I have no sin, I deceive myself and the truth is not in me. I admit that I have fallen short in my thoughts, words, and actions, and I cannot pretend to be righteous on my own. I humbly bring my sins before You, acknowledging them rather than hiding them. I thank You for Your promise that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me my sins and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Purify my heart, O Lord, and wash away every stain of wrongdoing. Help me to live in Your light, and I thank You for the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses me from all sin. I do not want to make You a liar by claiming I have not sinned, but instead, I rely on Your grace and mercy to transform me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
