Day 30—NO IDOLS

I John 5:21: "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols."

An idol is broadly defined as an image or object worshipped as a god. Idolatry is the worship of idols. A second definition would be excessive attention to something. Most of us would not bow down to idols on our fireplace mantel or eat meat offered to idols, but we have many potential things to take our attention away from God. These excessive devotions become our modern day idols. For example: MONEY—Although we need money, we should not live for money. WORK—We must work to earn money to care for our families, but it should not dominate all our time. POSSESSIONS—A materialistic mindset, always wanting more and more things can become an idol. Other examples could be hobbies, status, people, or habits. Ask the Holy Spirit to keep you in check and balance. He is our Counselor and our Guide.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your grace and the assurance of eternal life. As Your child, I ask for the wisdom and strength to heed the warning in 1 John 5:21. Protect my heart from idols. Guard me against anything and everything that might take Your rightful place in my affections. Search me, Lord, and reveal any hidden distractions, false comforts, or worldly pursuits that I have elevated above You. Remove rival thrones and help me to worship and serve You alone. Keep my focus centered on Jesus Christ, the true God, and empower me to walk in Your truth every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Have a blessed day! Pr Jenny
